Did you have me pegged as a fisherwoman?! I bet you are surprised! Well, I was introduced to the sport of fishing by my ex-partner who was a keen fisherman. We used to travel all over the UK to try out fishing spots – both for sea fishing & carp fishing. And let me tell you, there is something truly special about sitting on the banks of a stunning lakeside vista relaxing & being in tune with nature. Make sure to visit a specialist carp tackle shop to stock up on kit before you get there! Bring plenty of snacks & drinks as not all venues will have food facilities. Oh & make sure to wrap up warm on chilly days!
I have included 6 of the best fishing venues that we discovered over the years, plus a sentimental one at the end, as the very first venue that we visited back in our home country of Northern Ireland.
Tatton Mere, Tatton Park, Cheshire
This is the most local fishery to our home in the Cheshire countryside. The natural beauty of Tatton Park is an amazing setting for carp fishing – plus there are reports of carp up to 57-pounds (some of the biggest in the UK)! This venue was designed by Sir Humphry Repton and is popular for purely pleasure anglers and match anglers alike. Well worth a visit! Plus you can visit the beautiful park and mansion while you are there!
Partridge Lakes, Warrington, Cheshire
Another local gem! Found in Warrington (mid way between Liverpool & Manchester) Partridge Lakes fishery has 70-acres of stunning Cheshire countryside as its backdrop. In the 15 (yes, 15!!) different, individually landscaped waters there is something for all levels and abilities.
Bluebell Lakes, Peterborough
Bluebell Lakes complex boasts 5 specimen coarse and carp lakes, and is a firm favourite amongst experienced carp anglers. You may be lucky and fish carp up to a whopping 60lb! You can see the attraction, for anglers of all abilities. Plus, the toilet facilities were spotless (very important for me!) & if I remember rightly there was a tasty burger van on site!
Caerphilly Castle, South Wales
This was one of the most stunning venues! Fishing with views of a beautiful Norman castle?! Yes please! There are a series of lakes, which formerly made up the moat surrounding the castle. There is a wide variety of fish stocked. A truly unique fishing experience, you can even position your baits against the medieval foundations of the castle!
Horseshoe Lake, Gloucestershire
A lake in a horseshoe shape, Horseshoe Lake is the dream location for carp fishers looking for a potential big catch. Horseshoe Lake spans a massive 62-acres, and is an extremely popular location. The lake is also home to other varieties, allowing you to enjoy a rich fishing experience. Note, to fish here, you must be a member of The Carp Society who own the lake! Definitely worth a trip though!
Cofton Holidays, Devon
Now for something different – an actual fishing holiday experience! These lodges are proper luxury! We never did stay here but it was high on the wish list! Each lodge is set directly into the hillside so you can enjoy some fantastic views of the Devon countryside. There is also a campsite & (dog friendly!) static caravans as alternative accommodation options.
There are 4 fantastic fishing lakes with carp up to 30lb. Fishing is also restricted to guests staying at the site and you can fish from dawn to dusk then retire to your accommodation! There is also an on site shop, restaurant, swimming pool and entertainment during high season.
Polehill Carp Fishery, Newtownards, Northern Ireland
And finally here is my sentimental choice, as I grew up not far from here! Polehill Carp fishery is nestled in stunning scenery between Newtownards & Donaghadee. It is 9 acre venue consists of 4 fantastic lakes all superbly stocked with a variety of fish and specimen carp as well. However, Polehill has yet to see the record breaking 20+ lbs catches – so far they go up to 10 lbs.
So, there you have it – let me know if you are a secret fishing fan?! And if any of these destinations take your fancy?
